ずいぶん前のことですが、「1/f ゆらぎ」というものが注目されました。これは簡単に言いますと「心地良い不規則さ」と表現できるでしょう。規則正しいものは、次の動き方を予測することができます。しかし規則性のないものは予測することができません。規則正しいものと規則性のないものというこの二つの相反する要素が絶妙なバランスで融合しているものを「ゆらぎ」と言います。「基本的に規則正しいが、その中に微妙に不規則性が混じっていて、やわらかい印象が生じている」というようなイメージです。そのゆらぎの一つが、「1/f ゆらぎ」と呼ばれるものです。たとえば、1/f ゆらぎが存在するものとして、次のようなものがあります。
